We stayed at a hotel near the UN Plaza, which was pretty decent. Except that when we checked in 5 hours after check-in time we were told we would have to wait another hour for our room. And we'd been traveling since 4:30 a.m. Oh, and except that when we got to the room it smelled like smoke. And then they told us it was the only room available. And I was nauseated from being on the plane all day and had been throwing up. NOT a great welcome. They tried to make it up to us and gave us free breakfast at the hotel buffet every day we were there, a discount on the smoky room, free dinner than night, and an upgrade the next day to a suite. They were almost forgiven.
After recovering with a swim and bite to eat, we went on a late night excursion around the city.
Ceiling of Grand Central Station:
We met my cousin Georgina at the restaurant where she waits tables (Tavern on Jane). Very cute place. Afterwards we walked back to our hotel. It was like 2 in the morning by the time we got back and the city was still hopping!
The next day we slept in a tad and then went for a run in Central Park. Something about the heat, the plane-legs and the late night made this a difficult excursion for me. So we didn't last all that long. Afterwards we rewarded ourselves with the best bagels in the world, at Ess'a Bagel. I prefer the whole wheat bagel (oh my chewy, nutty goodness) with tofu cream cheese. Sounds healthy but trust me, it's not. Jeremy prefers the everything bagel with kalamata olive cream cheese.
We walked through the Village and window shopped. Jeremy made a rapid bee-line for this upscale chocolate shop. It was HOT, and we desperately needed a cool treat. We settled on a frozen yogurt place right before walking around the corner only to see an obviously popular and mouth-watering gelato shop. Crap! We vowed we would return to make up for the obvious poor timing.
Remember how I mentioned it was hot? Well, it was HOT. The kind of weather where this behavior is completely understood, and encouraged...
..but THIS! I wanted to rush over and put ice cubes down their spandex. But I never would've because they were just plain gross.
There was plenty of good people-watching at Washington Square Park and we returned here a couple more times to enjoy.
We made our way over to the Hudson to get a good look at Jersey City, and the plethora of men sunbathing in speedos at the park. It was pretty comical when it started to sprinkle and the speedo-clad men ran for cover.
We stopped off for a snack at the delicious Corner Bistro (split a burger and fries) before heading over to see our show!
We really enjoyed the show--very entertaining. Afterwards we had a late dinner at John's Pizza on Bleeker. We did have a salad with it, not to curb caloric intake (we had walked like 10 miles that day), but to help prevent plumbing problems that can occur with a combination of dehydration, pregnancy, and replacing fruits and veggies with cheese in the diet.
Oh goodness. I can hardly stand looking at that pizza, I want some so badly. I guess this is the start of another 2 year NY pizza craving until we can return. More on this trip later!! I'm off for a snack (albeit a disapointing one).
