We have been enjoying the outer Mission district with Betsy and Steve quite a bit lately. One rainy morning this month we met Steve at Dynamo Donuts for breakfast.

We tried the citrus ginger, chocolate almond rosemary and lemon thyme donuts with hot chocolate. So good. I love how they use just a tiny hint of savory spice within their sweet treats.

Afterwards we went to La Palma Mexicatessen (my new favorite word) to check out their handmade tortillas. We got Jeremy a burrito to take to work for his lunch.
Later in February, in honor of Valentine's Day, we joined Betsy and Steve for dinner (amazing 5 cheese mac n' cheese) at their place. On the way we picked up some pie slices from Mission Pie (apple and banana cream). A lot of the time I don't like pies that are not homeade. The crust is rarely flakey and the filling is sticky goop that is overspiced and too sweet. This pie was AWESOME: flaky crust, and filling that acutally tasted like the fruit for which it was named. We also picked up a pint of ice cream from Humphrey Slocombe. We sampled all of the flavors before choosing one. Guess which was the best (and also happened to complement apple pie perfectly)? Olive oil ice cream!! Sounds nasty, right? But it actually tasted like ice cream with a delicate hint of citrus.
Well, we were inspired by all of our recent success in the outer Mission district so a couple weekends later we went on a sampling tour.
We started out at Phat Philly to share an amazing Philly cheesesteak loaded with hot peppers and cheddar sauce. The buns are shipped in from Philly! We also got some waffle fries. So good.
Next up was a mini taco from our favorite little taco stand.
Betsy had to try the donuts she missed out on earlier in the month. She chose chocolate spice (pretty much your dream donut) and I chose dulce de leche.
The boys hit up Humphrey Slocombe. Steve got Valrhona fudgesicle and Jeremy got malted vanilla. I ate lots of his cone.
I just like this old building in the neighborhood.
Oh, and did I mention that all of this great food is within walking distance? We walked from place to place, burning 1.6% of the calories we ingested!
Jeremy and I remained in the neighborhood to browse in some of the fun shops. And fruitful browsing it was! We're doing our part to stimulate the economy.
I have been looking for boots for a long time. I didn't want high heels, and most boots don't fit my calves very well. I finally found some that don't look ridiculous on me, and they are green, which is unique and also my favorite color. In real life, they look a darker shade of green than this picture. I love them!! Did I mention that they were also heavily discounted?

Not much further down the street we fell in love with some retro kitchen chairs at a store called Therapy (they have a furniture branch and a clothing branch, both of which I love equally). The chairs go perfectly with our retro table I got from my parents who have had it since the 70s.
Also green, and so, so comfy. Plus, this purchase was a great excuse to take our other chairs down to store at Jeremy's dad's warehouse. I got to have a very yummy lunch and chat with Glenn, who is a wonderful father-in-law. It was so nice.
So, as it turns out, the Mission district has our tastebuds and our pocket books wrapped around its little fingers.
