Little Jaunt South

So this year, for the second week of February Jeremy was presented with 2 options: pay your own way to go to a conference in Tennessee where you may or may not learn anything useful...OR take 3-4 days off of school. Jeremy opted for the latter since he has a lifetime to go to professional meetings, had no desire to go to Nashville and is trekking up a steep learning curve already from school alone. So he went to LA where he spent time with family and surfed tons. I took Friday off work and joined him Thursday night and for the rest of the weekend.

Jeremy arrived in LA and picked up his board to find a lovely 6 inch slice through the board bag (well-padded) and into his board. Nice. And apparently the airline does not take responsibility. We'll do a cost benefit analysis next time we consider a cheaper flight with Southwest.

My parents were flying to New Zealand Tuesday night (they are living in NZ for the next several months)and they met Jeremy at the airport when he flew in. The plan was for us to take the car during their absence. So he bid my parents farewell, took their car and headed over to Brandon and Lucy's place.

Over the next couple days Jeremy surfed C Street and Little Rincon in Ventura, and El Porto and really enjoyed time spent with Brandon, Lucy, Filipe and my grandparents.
I arrived Thursday night and Jeremy picked me up from the airport. We dropped my stuff off at Brandon and Lucy's, chatted a bit and then all went to Diddy Reise for an exquisite cookie ice cream sandwich. This time I got snickerdoodles with PB, chocolate ice cream in the middle. Quite the sugar hit.

In the morning we woke up to Filipe's noise-making trike, starting at about 6 am. The little tune played over...and over...and over until we finally gave up on sleep a couples hours later. So funny that they never tire of pressing that button! Filipe is the cutest little thing, though. It is impossible to be annoyed by anything he does. After chatting with Lucy and Filipe for a while we drove down to San Clemente.

Jeremy surfed Trestles and I went for a run down the beach. My run was awesome. It was not a good workout by any means, because I kept stopping for long periods of time to watch the dolphins. They were close to shore and there were TONs of them out. I was totally engrossed in watching their play. They were surfing the waves, jumping etc. It was a gorgeous, warm day and I had to restrain myself from running into the water to try and swim with them, reminding myself that they would likely just swim away.

Jeremy and I went to the Rip Curl outlet afterwards where we bought him some stuff, grabbed a burrito (er...actually 2 each) from Pedro's Tacos and then drove further south to Carlsbad to pick Jeremy's brother Kalen up from school.

Kalen was cute--he was so excited to see us, show us his school and introduce us to his teachers. We were glad for the chance to go see him. We went to the store and bought a frisbee, wiffle ball set, a set of not 1, but 4 joke plastic teeth (best 88 cents I ever spent) and popsicles. We went to the beach and played around with our loot and took a walk down the pier. Lovely evening.

After driving around a while we finally chose a Chinese restaurant for dinner (Kalen was overwhelmed by the responsibility of choosing out of the vast selections).
After dinner we got a tour of Kalen's house and then bid farewell. Kalen's doing great and it was so nice to see him in a setting in which he is thriving.

We drove up to my aunt, uncle and cousins' (the Andrews) house in Tustin. Katherine picked the entertainment for the evening...watching Rocketman. We felt lucky to get to spend a fun evening with this busy family (and everyone was there)!

The next day we took Nick and Sarah to go surfing and had a blast with these two witty ones. It is crazy to me that we are now hanging out with them as peers when I've babysat them several times in past years. We found fun waves for longboarding at San Onofre.

After a good session we ate In-N-Out and custom Jamba Juice smoothies. Nick worked at Jamba over the summer/fall and invented several concoctions, one of which is named "16 Ounces of Love." When I was down for the CF Conference last fall I heard little Katherine order this--funniest thing ever.
We got home, hot tubbed, played outside a little with William and then drove back up North.

The traffic wasn't great, but Brandon was in a meeting until 5 pm so we made it by then, and spent a super fun evening with Brandon, Lucy and Filipe. We went to a delicious Cuban restaurant...and to Diddy Reise again. This time Jeremy and I traded selections and I had chocolate chip cookies with PB & chocolate ice cream (he tried the snickerdoodles). What a great evening. Brandon and Lucy are such choice individuals and we love being around them. Filipe charmed us all evening, as usual and continued to do so the next morning.

Already sporting a necklace from his mom's room, Filipe decided he needed to try on one of each shoe variety he saw in our room. He found it was quite a task to walk in them.

WHat a good little kitchen helper!

We went over to my grandparents, where we had planned to make them breakfast. Almost immediately upon seeing us my grandma slyly asked if Jeremy would be making his crepes. So unlike her to be so bold and request something, but she loves them SO much. Of course we couldn't plan to make anything but her favorite. It was satisfying to see her eat so well. She usually has a very thin slice of bread with a thicker slice of butter for breakfast. We made my grandad bacon and eggs, which he ate in addition to the crepes. I always love spending time with my grandparents. They are brilliant, funny, kind and wise. I was glad we had this day with them before returning home.

We drove home and stopped over at Jeremy's parents to say hi, which was a nice break in a long drive. I have to say though, I really don't mind road trips (within reasonable distance). It is relaxing and fun to have nothing to do but talk and listen to music.

I'm so glad Jeremy didn't choose Tennessee...
