Ah, the smell of pinewood!

I feel like I have a lot of blogging catch-up to do! I guess I will look back on some of the fun/ funny experiences of the last couple months. It might take several short posts to catch up.

We recently had a pinewood derby fundraiser for the scouting program at church. Jeremy and I were too late to buy a kit so our friends Robyn and Shawn generously offered to share theirs with us, so we planned to work on the race car design together.

I invited them over for dessert, followed by pinewood carpentry. Robyn mis-heard the invitation and the two of them came over expecting dinner. Some of the more awkward moments of my life ensued. After repeated comments and looks of confusion upon my attempts to serve dessert we finally got on the same page:

Robyn: Oh, are we having that first? (as I pull the pie out of the fridge)
Liz, thinking: Ok, so they want to eat the cheese and crackers that they brought first.
After cheese and crackers...
Jeremy: So, should we eat some pie?
Robyn and Shawn exchange confused looks.
Liz catches on: Oh, did you guys not have dinner yet?
Robyn: No....did you???

Very, very awkward. More so for me or them? Hard to say. Luckily, we did have some leftovers to serve them before pie. Just a funny story between us now, and we had some good laughs that night as well.

Our derby car was like none you've ever seen. Equipment used: pocket leather-man, paper, fingernail polish, chewed gum, printed flame graphics, glue, gatorade and power bar labels, digital camera, bicycle tire, bicycle helmets.

You can see how well our result
matched our stunning schematic:

Look close, you can see
our brave drivers:

Before you mock, let it be announced that this car won a trophy for "Best Design." This trophy is proudly on display in Robyn and Shawn's living room. The spoiler fastened with gum has however, fallen off. It will be fixed for its next run.

The drivers are Jeremy and Shawn, wearing bike helmets while holding a bike tire as the steering wheel. No, we didn't have alcohol with dessert.
